Ten tips to packing light for your summer holiday!

11 Feb

In 1940s films, glamorous characters board steam ships with an army of porters to lug their many bulky suitcases (all beautifully matching of course). But in today’s age of airline travel, that kind of thing would never happen (not for us normal folks anyway). Nowadays you are charged up $100 for checked bags on a domestic flight, gone are the days of packing every item of clothing that you might conceivably wear on your European vacation.

I’ve had many a holiday (pre kiddie) with just carry on luggage. It saves on costs, time and makes things a lot easier. Here are my top ten tips for packing light for your summer holiday!

1. Make a list, and check it twice.
As you organise what you absolutely need, you’ll realize what you don’t need.

2. Pack a little detergent and a cheap camping clothesline.
If you can spare 10 minutes a night to wash your unmentionables and what you wore that day, you can save a lot of space in your suitcase. Washing your stuff in the shower, rolling it into a towel, squeeze out the excess water, hang it up to dry and in the morning, clean and fresh.

3. Start liking the layered look
Wear multiple layers of lightweight attire, which will trap air and conserve body heat. Large lightweight cotton wraps are are really great to travel with, cool in summer and warm in winter.

4. Make ‘repurposing’ your new buzzword.
You won’t have to pack as much stuff if you pick items that can serve double or triple duty.

5. Pack wrinkle-resistant items.
Certain fabrics simply hold up better on the road, and the latest generation of wrinkle-resistant synthetic blends are one example.

6. Go with a consistent colour scheme.
When everything in your travel wardrobe matches everything else, you increase the number of mix-and-match options. To change up a look include a few of your favourite coloured scarves, they don’t take up any space and are are great accessory.

7. Get over your shoe obsession.
Limit yourself to packing no more than two to three pairs.

8. Pack tight
The tighter and flatter you can get your stuff inside your bag, the more space you’ll have for more stuff. Rolling or bundle-wrapping your clothes, in which you wrap garments tightly around a central core object.

9. Think miniature
When in doubt, smaller is better. Don’t waste precious space in your toiletries bag with full-size containers of deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste and lotions (and they are likely to be confiscated when going through security). Instead, pick up some sample sizes at your local chemist or decant them into travel-sized mini bottles

10. Pack a lightweight turkish towel
These make the perfect beach towel, bath towel, sarong and pareo. It is specially blended from fast drying cotton, does not mildew, doesn’t hold the sand like heavy wet terry towelling and easily rolls small to fit in your suitcase. Designed to be a multi-functional lightweight bath towel that seconds as a tablecloth, table runner and picnic blanket.

The point is: Be smart and pack light. You’ll save the extra costs on paying for checked luggage, you’ll save time having to wait for your luggage to come through on the airport carousel, you’ll save your back having to lug all the luggage around and you’ll minimize the chances of leaving something behind at a hotel.

P.S. But unfortunately I’ve found out, there is no such thing as packing light when you have children because there are an endless lists of favourites that need to come along with them when they go anywhere . . .

Fashion Friday :: Monochrome Magic!

1 Feb
the-night-circusTodays post has been inspired in part by an interesting novel that I have just started reading called ‘The Night Circus’ by Erin Morgenstern.
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.
Is there anything easier and more classic than monochrome with a dash of red? It always looks timeless, crisp and translates into everything from fashion accessories to home wares.

A perennial classic, monochrome remains so eminently wearable in that it is both striking yet conservative, the ultimate in juxtaposition. This is a timeless trend which will never go out of style due to the elegance and simplicity exuded by the colours.

Some in the crowd smile knowingly, while others frown and look questioningly at their neighbours. A child near you tugs on her mother’s sleeve, begging to know what it says. “The Circus of Dreams”, comes the reply. The girl smiles delightedly. The iron gates shudder and unlock, seemingly by their own violation.

They swing outward, inviting the crowd inside.

Now the circus is open.

Now you may enter.

Exciting happenings just around the corner

26 Dec

I have some very exciting news to share with you about what ‘Rock Ribbons’ has planned for early in the year!

As you know up until now everything in both my Etsy and online store has been designed and handmade by yours truly but in 2013 things will be changing ever so slightly! You’ll still be able to purchase all your ‘Rock Ribbons’ favourites in both online stores. But I’ll be expanding out the brand to include a few of my very favourite finds, that I know you’ll love (as much as I do) from artisan and fine crafts people in Turkey and Morocco.

Those of you that know me personally, know that I have a real passion and  interest in Persian, Moorish and Ottoman art, craft and design. I have been searching tirelessly for the right craftspeople to ethically source and work together with ‘Rock Ribbons’  to showcase their beautiful handmade objects.

From early next year (2013) I will be including two new product lines that are tried and tested during my world travels and in my own home. Beautiful natural and versatile, 100% cotton handwoven pestemal hammam towels which are handwoven and dyed with natural plant dyes and the colourful hand stitched long lasting Moroccan leather pouf/ottoman.

Handwoven pestemal hammam towels in Rock Ribbons

I’m very excited about the craftspeople I’ll be working with and having both these great products in store. The pestemal hammam towels will be available in January 2013. The moroccan leather poufs will be coming early 2013 and I am going to try something very new (for me) called crowd funding. This is where I might need your help (please and thank you), I will be launching a ‘Pozible’ campaign in January in order to create funds to purchase a larger wholesale order of the leather poufs from my trusted agent and skilled artisans contacts in Fez.

I’ll be posting more ‘Pozible’ campaign details closer to the date and over next few weeks and I’ll be explaining to you why I think these two products are so great!

Endless loop of fashionable bliss

20 Dec

Here’s something for those of you that are feeling the chills on the other side of the world! The infinity scarf is this season’s big accessory news. As a matter of fact, it’s every season’s favorite accessory!

What is it? ::

Well, for starters, think of the infinity scarf as an endless loop of fashionable bliss. It’s trendy, sophisticated, super stylish and so very versatile. The infinity or circular scarf is much like a traditional scarf, but with no end.  A circular scarf that can be looped around the neck once, twice or multiple times. Having one loop of scarf rather than two ends gives a cleaner, neater look and removes the confusion on what the heck to do with those scarf tails!

What to wear it with? ::

Slip a fabulous pink knit infinity scarf around the neck over a white t-shirt, with a denim jacket and a floral print skirt. Wrap it once, wrap it twice, and if it rains pull it up over your hair and there you go – instant hoodie! Wear them with T’s, wear them with dresses, jeans and winter coats. The infinity scarf is available in my Etsy store and Rock Ribbons online store, in lots of beautiful on trend colours. Made with a soft and lightweight pashmina combination of 80% cashmere and 20% silk which makes them wearable all through Autumnal chills, Winter cold and the cool days of early Spring.

Get 10% off your order by entering the code ‘Thanks for shopping at Rock Ribbons’ at check out in ‘Rock Ribbons’ online store.

Ombré, mi amore.

4 Dec

‘Hhhhooommm Bbrrraaayyy’, {breathy voice} just the word itself sounds alluring and intriguing. Ombré is a French word meaning ‘to shade’ and is often used to describe a dip-dye effect given to fabric in which the shades of color graduate from light to dark. The most sophisticated look is based on a monochromatic color scheme but three different complementary colors can also be combined like in my new range of lightweight scarves. The look is all about color, with the feeling an artist has dipped and shaded the colors by hand. This simple dyeing or playing with colour technique lends itself to all types of garments and fashion accessories and I’ve even transferred the gradient effect to ‘Rock Ribbons’ satin ribbon woven cushions.

Looking around my store its easy to see how I feel about colour and ombré, its ‘mi amore’.

Toadstools popping up everywhere!

28 Nov

These fun little night light mushrooms proved to be such a hit with you all at a recent ‘Rock Ribbons’ event last week, that I’ve decided to see how they will go stocking them in store. I always think they look a little ‘Alice in Wonderland’!

The colours available are yellow, green, pink, red and blue, all with cute little white polka dots. They will retail for an introductory offer of $5.00 each or a discounted $20.00 if you would love a set of all five colours. They make great night lights for kids rooms or presents for the little ones and take just three small AAA batteries. They are perfectly safe to leave on all night and easy for little hands to turn on and off, just by pressing down twice on the top of the toadstool.

They are on order and on the way to ‘Rock Ribbons’ HQ as we speak but if you would like to pre-order, please contact me here.
